Portable vs Built-In Swim Jets: Which Is Right for Your Pool?

A swim jet can make a short backyard pool useful for continuous swimming, fitness and family recreation, but the first decision is not necessarily which brand to buy. It is whether you want a plug-and-play system or a permanently installed system. That choice affects installation, pool compatibility, current characteristics and total cost. What is a plug-and-play swim jet?

A plug-and-play swim jet is designed to add a counter-current without permanently plumbing the unit into the pool. The iGarden M Series sets up in about 10 minutes, runs on safe 12V power, and requires no plumbing, drilling or electrician. It uses a PMSM motor with five swim modes, controlled via touchscreen, Bluetooth remote and app.

The M Series currently includes two models. The M180 delivers 180 m³/h at up to 3.3 m/s, while the M230 delivers 230 m³/h at up to 4.0 m/s. The minimum recommended pool size is 5 m x 3 m. The practical advantage is flexibility: the unit can be removed, stored or moved between suitable pools rather than becoming part of the pool infrastructure.

What is a built-in or permanently installed swim jet?

Permanent systems cover several technologies. BADU's Turbo and Turbo Pro use propeller technology, with Australian distributor Speck publishing maximum flow rates of 245 and 350 m³/h. These are primarily designed as integrated systems installed during pool construction or major renovation. Endless Pools' Fastlane uses Hydrodrive technology, with deck-mount installation for many existing pools and wall-mount installation for new construction.

These systems offer unlimited mains-powered runtime and can produce wide, specialised currents. However, installation typically requires professional fitting, electrical provisions, and potentially pool or deck modifications.

Plug-and-play vs built-in: the practical trade-offs

Plug-and-play systems make the strongest case where avoiding major pool work matters. They can be attractive for existing pools, seasonal use, renters with permission to use the equipment, or owners who do not want a permanent installation. The M Series runs on safe 12V voltage, which simplifies electrical requirements compared with mains-powered permanent systems.

Permanently installed systems make more sense where the pool is being designed or renovated around swimming, where the owner wants the equipment to remain fully integrated, or where higher-output propeller or turbine technology is preferred. They can also offer wider or more specialised currents, but installation and electrical requirements should be included in the buying decision rather than considered after the equipment price.

Which should you choose?

Choose a plug-and-play swim jet first if your priorities are minimal construction, flexibility and straightforward setup. The M180 suits recreational swimming and families at A$4,620, while the M230 suits fitness-focused swimmers at A$5,720. Consider a permanently installed system if you want a higher-output propeller or Hydrodrive installation and are prepared to invest in the additional fitting work.

Strong swimmers should not choose from m³/h alone. Manufacturers describe current performance differently: iGarden publishes flow rate and maximum speed, while Fastlane emphasises swimming pace and adjustable Hydrodrive current. A trial swim is therefore valuable before investing in a high-cost permanent system.

A useful rule for Australian pool owners

Start with the pool rather than the product. Record the pool dimensions, available electrical supply, preferred swimming pace and whether permanent modification is acceptable. Then compare systems against those requirements. That process is more reliable than selecting the largest published flow number.
