A swim jet advertised at 250 m³/h may sound stronger than one rated at 200 m³/h, but that does not automatically mean it will create a better swimming current. Flow volume is important, yet swimmers experience a combination of water volume, velocity, current width, depth, turbulence and how the flow behaves at swimming distance. Manufacturers also publish performance in different ways, which makes simple number-for-number comparisons risky.

What does m³/h mean?

m³/h means cubic metres of water moved per hour. A published flow of 200 m³/h therefore represents a water-volume figure of 200 cubic metres per hour under the manufacturer's stated conditions. It is useful for understanding the scale of a system, but it does not tell you by itself how wide or smooth the current feels, where the measurement was taken or what swimming pace a user can maintain.

Why outlet speed and swimmer speed are different

The iGarden M Series provides a useful example. The M180 is listed at 180 m³/h with a maximum flow speed of 3.3 m/s, while the M230 delivers 230 m³/h at up to 4.0 m/s. These are outlet specifications, meaning the flow speed at the point where water leaves the unit. The current a swimmer experiences at their swimming position will differ because water velocity decreases with distance from the outlet.

This distinction matters because the swimmer is not positioned inside the outlet. When comparing systems, ask whether the published speed refers to the outlet or to a specified swimming distance.

Different technologies publish different metrics

The iGarden M Series publishes flow rate in m³/h and maximum speed in m/s. By contrast, BADU describes its Turbo and Turbo Pro as propeller systems producing an even, smooth, splash-free flow, with maximum published rates of 245 and 350 m³/h.

Endless Pools' Fastlane takes a different approach again. Its official specification highlights Hydrodrive technology, dozens of adjustable settings and a top speed expressed as a 1:08 per 100-yard swimming pace rather than leading with an m³/h figure.

These differences in how manufacturers present performance make it difficult to compare systems on a single number. A figure published as outlet flow is not the same as a figure published as swimming pace, and both should be understood in context.

What actually makes a good swim current?

For most buyers, five characteristics matter more than a single maximum number: usable swimming pace, width of the current, depth and body coverage, smoothness or turbulence, and adjustability. A current that is technically powerful but narrow or turbulent may be harder to hold position in than a broader flow matched to the swimmer's stroke.

Pool geometry matters too. Water reflected from nearby walls, the position of the unit and the swimmer's distance from the outlet can influence the experience. This is one reason serious swimmers should trial a system where practical instead of assuming two products with similar m³/h ratings will feel the same.

How should you compare swim jets?

Use m³/h as one data point, not the decision. Ask each supplier for: maximum flow volume; current speed at swimming distance if available; current width; number of adjustment levels; recommended swimmer level; suitable pool dimensions; power requirements; and whether a swim demonstration is available.

The takeaway

The best swim jet is not necessarily the one with the biggest m³/h figure. For casual exercise, a moderate adjustable current such as the M180's 180 m³/h may be sufficient. For powerful swimmers and triathletes, the M230's higher output or a permanently installed system may provide the resistance needed for serious training.
